A company is trying to improve productivity. To do so, managers push employees to work longer hours. At first, output increases, but after a few months, employees begin to show signs of burnout. Productivity per hour starts to fall, absenteeism rises, and turnover increases. To maintain output, managers again increase expectations on remaining staff.
